How We Engage The Medical Staff and Referring MD's

The expectations of most medical staffs are high when it comes to their hospitalist programs. But the expectations do vary amongst hospitals, so it is vitally important that we learn each medical staff's particular needs. Further, the physicians who comprise the medical staff are the main source of referrals to the hospitalist service, so an effective outreach effort is important. So this is how we engage both the medical staff and the physician referral base:

  • We actively solicit medical staff input
  • We participate in the medical staff organization and committees
  • We accept unattached patients in accordance with medical staff directives
  • We actively seek new referral sources (Urgent Care, Rural Health Clinics, etc)
  • We develop close working relationship with the ED and the ED Physicians
  • We work closely with specialists in providing medical management for their patients

"But communication is two-sided - vital and profound communication makes demands also on those who are to receive it... demands in the sense of concentration, of genuine effort to receive what is being communicated"    Roger Sessions
